The awards for the September 2024 PleinAir Salon Art Competition were announced on October 30th. The selections were made by judge, award-winning artist Kathie Odom. The overall and category winners will now be included in the judging for the 14th Annual PleinAir Salon Competition being awarded in May 2025.
FIRST PLACE
Susan Patton, Still Stirring (At 93)
Oil, 14×11 in.
“The story is front and center on this special painting. The idea is so out-of-the-box, even though this is everyday life for some. The best of edges, shapes, value, composition, movement… all there!! I love, love, love this painting!”
SECOND PLACE
Paul Kratter, The Matriarch
Oil, 16×20 in.
“For a long time I’ve been trying to learn more about color change within the same value. This painting is a master course in that very thing! Shapes that are abstract working to make a realistic appeal plus a great lesson in hard and soft edges. AND somehow, there is great emotion in this big mother.”
THIRD PLACE
Joe Gyurcsak, Asbury Park
Gouache, 6×12 in.
“This little 6×12 inch jewel is action-packed! How the foreground goes from a really warm/dark value and transitions into a cool/soft-edged distance, well, it’s breath-taking! I especially love the true rendering of the figures… there’s a party going on!”
CATEGORY WINNERS
Each category award winner is now entered into the Annual Competition. Judges will review all the winners from the 14th Annual PleinAir Salon, and we will award over $25,000 at the Annual Competition held in May 2025.
CATEGORY HONORABLE MENTIONS
The category honorable mention recipients are eligible to re-enter their paintings into future competitions.
TOP 100 FINALISTS
Each month all the entries are reviewed and scored by a judge. The paintings with the highest scores become the Top 100 Finalists. (In the event of tied scores, there may be more than 100). The awards for the monthly competition are selected from this group of finalist.
